How Do You Light Up Your Paint Booth?
Adequate brightness
This is clearly defined in the DIN EN standard. Different lux values apply to different work areas in the paint shop:
- Paint spraying and inspection: 1000 lux;
- Paint spray booths: 1000 lux;
- Refinishing work: 750 lux;
- Assembly work: 500 lux
Color rendering index Glare
Especially in a paint shop, the light must reproduce the surrounding colors as naturally as possible. the CRI (Color Rendering Index) reflects the color rendering of the light. Luminaires for professional craft stores should have a CRI of at least 80. In places where color is critical, such as paint shops, luminaires with a CRI of more than 90 are the best choice for optimal results.
Reflections and Glare
Paint shop lighting must not reflect off of high gloss surfaces. Therefore, even illumination is essential. In addition, luminaires must under no circumstances produce glare, which is not only unpleasant, but can also lead to accidents and hazards. Specially developed optics can prevent glare; however, the mounting height and angle are also important prerequisites for safe working. In order to recognize which luminaires have a stronger or weaker glare, the degree of glare can be measured by the so-called UGR value. For painting, refinishing and inspection work, we recommend UGR<19.
Explosion protection
Explosion protection in accordance with the ATEX directive
Depending on the design of your paint booth or spray booth, the luminaire must be explosion-proof. You can recognize this by the D and EX marks in the ATEX/IECEx certificate. We strongly advise against the use of diffuse luminaires in paint spray booths, as they tend to accumulate paint residues. We also recommend that you regularly remove paint residue from the fixtures and cover the lights with a plastic sheet that is changed on a weekly basis in order to prevent the paint covering the lights.
Water and Dust Protection for Paint Shop Lighting
In a paint shop, it is not only important to protect against dust and fog, but also water. The IP protection rating of the luminaire reflects both. The first digit stands for protection against foreign objects and contact, and the second digit for protection against moisture.
